lilly in the rose garden

Spotlight on: Markus Zusak

Posted on: October 14, 2011

I just got back from a Q & A session with the bestselling author Markus Zuzak! He was flying from Australia to do a tour around where I live, so a whole group of us convinced him to stop by and give a speech or two. (I got to go to three!) I asked him a few questions and got two books autographed. :)

For those of you who do not know who he is, Markus (as he insisted we call him OwO) is a writer from Sydney who has written many “young adult” (only listed as YA in some countries) books, including I am the Messenger, The Underdog, and The Book Thief. Some of his titles have become curriculum in select high schools. (Especially Book Thief, since it has some historical context)

Markus was a very pleasant, charming speaker. He told a few funny stories based off his recent experiences and childhood, and managed to make a whole gym full of people roar with laughter. He spent a long time talking and signing autographs for fans, many of whom were teenagers. I enjoyed his explanations of the processes involved with writing a novel and really making sure your reader is captivated by your storytelling. He provided wonderful insights to his books and for life in general.

Meanwhile, we also picked up a bit of Australian slang. My favorite was “esky.” (cooler/lunchbox)

I highly recommend The Book Thief to anybody that is willing to stick with it for all 5oo+ pages. Despite the setting being Nazi Germany, he managed to weave an intricate story that blew past all stereotypes and clichés. As an avid reader of books on that time period, I was pleasantly surprised. All in all, it is a fantastic read, and I’m so honored to have the opportunity to meet him face-to-face.

Hair growth progress- As of June 2015- I regularly trim my own bangs and they look amazing- choppy and short. The split ends have ruined lives and murdered small children. I haven't had a proper salon cut since July 2013. I might get a trim of 4ish inches by the end of the summer? I'm lazy.
