Sephora haul! (If one product can be considered a haul)

I’m so disappointed that my favorite lipgloss ever was discontinued, so I searched for a dupe.

IMG_2413 IMG_2412

(Two different kinds of lighting)

Top: Sephora glossy gloss in berry shake, bottom: Urban Decay lip junkie lipgloss in Naked (came with the Naked 2 palette)

Berry Shake:

-Glittery (more glitter and sparkle) but not sticky-shiny

-Fruity taste

-Not plumping (no mint or cinnamon)

Lip Junkie:

-Plumping

-Very sticky

-Sheer, light coverage

IMG_2418

Top is UD, bottom is Sephora

As you can see, Berry Shake is indeed more berry to UD’s lighter shade, but on my lips they look nearly the same. (The difference being that Berry has glitter wheras UD looks shiny because of how sticky it is. Berry rather just glides on without sticking)

Bottom line: The color is very close (With Sephora being a tad darker and definitely more berry), but the texture isn’t the same (Thick and sticky vs. smoother and slicker)

EDIT 6/3: UGHH I hate the Sephora lipgloss. It has NO lasting power. The color and sparkle is nice but it wear off after 15 minutes, which leaves glitter all over the edges of my lips. What a waste of time.

I’ve talked about mascara before, but today’s trip to Ulta reinvigorated me. I walked in with three 20% off coupons in hand which means, naturally, that I didn’t buy anything. The local store just remodeled! They added 3 or so new drugstore brands (yay) but truncated the existing brands, cut half of NYX away, and put the ulta brand against the wall where the new checkout line is (not yay). No more end caps with pastel lipsticks *pouts* The new layout seems more heavy on the perfume, but maybe that will change after the holidays

Moving on!

Both drugstore and high end brands were showing off some wonderful colorful mascaras today, so I felt like making a short masterpost. Interestingly enough, many brands have purple and blue available.

A word to the wise: Do not bother with Sally Girl brand mascara. It’s under a buck each and has cute mini sized packaging but its more like chalk than mascara…dry as heck and doesn’t even apply.

My old favorite: Maybelline Great Lash in blue, green, and pink (see older post)

Butter London-  Wink Mascara ($20) Link

(From left to right: Pistol Pink, Cheerio, Jaded Jack, Chav, Inky, and British Racing Green)

I also saw a lovely mid-range purple in store but it is not listed on their website. From the tester I checked out, it seemed thick and sparkly, with a very pigmented pop of color. Reviews on the butter London website vary. They sing praise of the deeper blue, but one user complained that the pink wasn’t bright enough. I’m surprised by the yellow! Who would have thought that color would have such impact! But it looked great in store.

2B Colours- Colors Make a Difference Mascara ($7.99) Link

Not shown: Prune, Grey Blue

It took me entirely too long to realize this is a European brand. It doesn’t seem to have an online shop. This may be more limited by which American stores carry it.

Hard Candy

A brand I’ve never tried but have heard good things about. Drugstoreprincess recs their concealer. I found blue, purple, silver, and glittery mascara for around $6 on the Walmart website

NYX Cosmetics- Color Mascara ($7) Link

233_1_[1]

(Left to right: Perfect Pear, Mint, Tea Rose Pink, Coral Reef, and Lavender)

Darn it! I have yet to see these irl. I love them! (Not shown: blue, purple and chocolate brown)

Ironically, while typing up this post, I discovered white eyelash primers for the first time. (I dunno. My routine has always been curl then apply mascara. For black or brown, a primer seems necessary? But for a wacky color, this could make the difference and seriously boost cheaper mascaras!)

E.L.F. has a primer for $3 (Reviews flip flop on if it does come out of the tube white)

NYX’s primer for $7

Ben Nye has a white mascara (Not for primer purposes. I just found it cool)

I love NYX. Cheap price, but nice creamy quality lipsticks. I still prefer Wet n Wild, but NYX (Which is the same price point as Ulta brand) releases wacky colors no other brand sells.

First, their Macaron collection. Last spring they released a collection of matte pastels (I bought colors Pistachio, Blue Velvet, and Coconut. Now, they have released a line called “Wicked Lippies” which is dedicated to sparkly metallic jewel tones, focusing much attention on the deep blue to purple range (The Macaron line was more of a rainbow, but Wicked offers copper and gold)

These lipsticks are super creamy, to the point that they crease easily on lips and can smudge on the edges (But what eye pencil would color match well enough to make a lip liner?) It’s pretty entertaining when I remove my blue lipstick and the residue looks like I’ve just consumed a messy ice cream cone. Needless to say, they are nourishing.

Pros:

Nourishing, creamy, bright, does not dry out lips, highly pigmented and bright. Only $6

Cons:

Smudges, messy, creases, not always easy to find in stores??? (They sold out quite a bit near me. And only Ulta stocked them. But they are available online)

Both lines contain a black lipstick. Being that I already own like 8 tubes of black, I felt the urge to investigate

nyx black lipstick

Chambord is Macaron, Cold Hearted is Wicked.

The stock image does not show this, but in person I noticed that Chambord actually has little glitter flecks among the black. I do not know it that is just a spray on the top layer or if the glitter is dispersed throughout the entire tube. Since it comes from the matte line, I’d hope that the glitter wouldn’t ruin that clean finish. (They really are matte irl just so you know. It’s intense)

Cold hearted, which I have yet to see irl, seems like a lighter shade of black because of the metallic finish. I wouldn’t jump to conclusions and assume it to be more of a dark grey, however, because the grey (Black Sesame- described as a light grey) is shown as nearly white in the stock images but is truly a light to mid level grey in real life. (Much darker!)

And, as a side note: I would rec the Macaron black for Homestuck cosplay. Risqué (Wicked) could work for Kanaya unless it’s as teal as one user submitted photo shows it as. Any blue or purple blood would also be covered by the Wicked line. I wouldn’t rec the Macaron line. Blue Velvet was too bright to be Vriska.

3-13-14: I read on EGL that Bodyline was having a free shipping promotion, so I went and checked out their inventory and see if anything caught my eye. Onepiece dress L213 was very cute and I had been eyeing it for a while, so I ordered it.

Price: ¥2,999  Shipping (Air mail): Free

4-7-14: Dress received. 4 weeks and 4 days (My last order last year took about 4 weeks to arrive. I don’t believe I did airmail, though)

The dress is cute, just as expected. It just requires a bell-shaped petti…which I don’t have. It looks equally good without any petti or with absolute minimal poof, as a nice sweet floral dress. I was hoping to wear it more himegyaru style but the lace screams sweet Lolita.

IMG_2257IMG_2259

The bag was pretty torn up all down one side. Thank goodness they double bag because this could have been bad! This is the local postal system’s fault, but I am still surprised. With all the online shopping I do, I’ve never seen a bag in this condition.

IMG_2262 IMG_2265

Front of the dress and detail of bodice~ Check out that rose lace. It’s on many Bodyline garments. I like it very much.

I’m top heavy and I was able to fit easily in the top, but it does look strained. Take care to wear a tighter bra and watch for too much uniboob.

IMG_2266

Sleeve- this polka-dot lace lines the hemline too!!

The sleeves are SERIOUSLY tight and too short. They are dainty little cap sleeves that barely go down my shoulder, which would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that the elastic is both itchy and overly tight. I had deep grooves on my arm after a day of wear ):

IMG_2268 IMG_2267

Back- mmm look at that shirring.

IMG_2274copy

(super quick lazy photo. Mega deflated bodyline petti in use)

The dress doesn’t wow me. It fully meets my expectations, save the sleeves. Seams all around the bodice are pretty itchy, the lace is the usual Bodyline quality. Meh. I like it, I’m going to wear it frequently as a casual dress, not full Lolita. I’m glad I caught it during the no-shipping campaign, since I ended up paying only $30USD for it.

Bottom Line: I would rec this dress to others, but check your measurements thoroughly first and think about if the sleeves will bug you/if you are ready to make adjustments to make them more comfortable.

Have you heard of Lace Market yet?

It’s a brand new site that is a mix between ebay and EGL comm sales. Users can put Lolita items up for auction or just a normal sale. The website itself is just a shiny, pretty way to facilitate payment via paypal, however, so there’s not much difference from Livejournal save the shopping cart and auction options.

I checked it out super casually, just to see what everyone was talking about, only to find a gorgeous OP listed for only $35. I scrolled down to the shipping information and went “waaaait what that’s a zip code from the next town over….” Turns out, the dress belonged to a Lolita from my local comm! I facebook messaged her with some color questions and decided I needed it in my life.

Thank goodness I knew her already and could contact her! When I created my Lace Market account, I typo’d my email address, so I was able to quickly tell her the correct one. She drives over near my school regularly, so we worked out a set date for us to meetup to hand off the dress, thus eliminating any shipping charge.

She seemed happy after I paid the invoice, as this was her first sale on the new website, so she also now can start building up feedback.

Here’s the breakdown:

1/5: Talked with seller, paid invoice, discussed meetup date

1/26: Had intended to meet up with seller downtown to receive dress (delay because our two schedules are very very different)

Now, her schedule shifted, so she promptly texted me like yeaaah I wont be there, would you like me to ship it instead. No charge(!)

Bloo is always so kind and nice <3 I am extremely grateful to her.

The dress in question: Old School Barbie JSK~ Sax

 (Her posted photo)

She said it was handmade (not by her), and despite the more lavender-looking picture, it was a nice baby blue irl. What I didn’t realize was how much is truly required a bell-shaped petticoat….I only have A-line. Whoops.

My photos:

IMG_2202 (Back)

IMG_2204 (Looots of shirring!)

IMG_2203 (Looots of ruffle- back)

IMG_2201 (Random detail from side)

This is very poofy, fluffy, and complicated. Lots of layers and ruffles that need to all be laying in the right direction to look right. It’s very princess and intricate. My only issue is the bows (shown above) and teal vs. the baby blue dress…and stand out quite a lot. Otherwise, I am extremely satisfied with the purchase, given its price and good value.

IMG_2120

Today I will be reviewing these 6 black lipstick/lip products. These make up my entire black lippie collection thus far, ranging from my earliest Halloween costume makeup to cosplay to everyday lipstick.

I love a good black lip. It adds a pop of color when paired with light, pink eyeshadow or ties together a fiery red and black look. I wear it to school, on Halloween, to cons, to meetups. It’s pretty common for me these days. Unfortunately, as you know, finding a good lipstick with staying power and vibrancy is difficult.

To start out, let’s discuss the biggest no-no in black lipstick

Fantasy Makers (by Wet n Wild) Black

IMG_2121

(Both shown above cost somewhere under $3)

This is what they sell at Publix and temporary Spirit Halloween stores for small children to smear on their faces. I bought this when I was ten. I wore it with my “Elphaba” costume and then later, in desperation, for Karkat.

fantasy makers

At best, it was a fine grey along the bottom of my lips. It was never fully opaque and would rub off quickly, leaving a yucky line of black crud just outside my lip line. .5/10 do not buy

The other lipstick in the above picture was a random no-brand one I found on an end cap in Walgreens once but never again. It was slightly better but still sticky, ineffective, and not worth the money. 1/10

no name brand (ahahaha the horror)

I’m going to jump over to the Sally Girl Lip Color in Witchy Woman now.

IMG_2125

This thing is TIIIINY. It was 84 cents at Sally’s Beauty Supply so I said “Why not?” It stinks though. It flat out refuses to go on my lips. It’s a pale grey, with almost more the consistency of a cheap chapstick lipbalm. It’s nourishing, I’ll give it that, but it certainly is not a true black lipstick. For under one dollar, however, it was worth a shot. 0/10

When it comes to black lipsticks, you don’t necessarily need to drop big bucks, but if one is so cheap it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t going to work. I’ve found more success in the $2-$6 range.

Next! (Hot Topic) Blackheart Poison Kiss lipstick

IMG_2124

When you think black, Hot Topic makes sense, right? So that’s where I tried next after Fantasy Makers wasn’t cutting it. This one is listed at $5 on their website.

I really wanted to like this one. The packaging was prettier than other lipsticks I owned. It seemed like a hit. At first, it applies relatively evenly but requires some serious coaxing to get it across my entire bottom lip. It looks fine for about 20 minutes before it fades and rubs off, leaving residue.

On its own, it’s several steps nicer that others, but still doesn’t have staying power. 5/10 (on its own)

However, it layers nicely with, say, black lipgloss! With a bit of gloss to cover the areas the lipstick just couldn’t cover, I was able to achieve a nice, shiny and long-lasting combination. 7/10 (combined with other products)

Now, luckily Rimmel came out with a Stay Glossy Lip Gloss in Black Diva

IMG_2123

I bought it at Walgreens for $5 (It seems that Target currently lists it for closer to $3. Many stores carry the Stay Glossy line but do not stock the black color. I find it interesting that they chose to include black, as it is an anomaly among the various pinks.)

On its own, the gloss is streaky and too wet to keep sticky. Application is messy and it does not coat the lip evenly. 4/10 (on its own)

But, of course, combined with a proper lipstick, it works pretty well. I rarely re-apply the black lipstick underneath and just refresh the look with more gloss. 7/10 (combined with other products)

wow

Finally, my new favorite

Wet n Wild Fergie lipstick in Pagan Angel

IMG_2126

I love these names. They bring out my almost-nonexistent babybat. I bought this one for under $4 at Walgreens. Now, for shades of pink and red I HIGHLY highly highly recommend the $1.99 Wet n Wild Megalast lipsticks. They are very drying but highly pigmented. The glossy shine wears off quickly but leaves a strong, matte color behind. They last a looong time but I need to hydrate a bunch in-between wears. I own several of them and use them every week just about.

So when I saw Wet n Wild had a new black lipstick, I was sold. (I see the hypocrisy here, as Fantasy Makers is by the same company, but there is a difference between the cheapo costume makeup and the proper lipstick lines meant for mainstream use)

The Fergie cosmetics are a little pricier than the basic lippies, but the quality continues to impress me. I’ll write more at length once I’ve used this one more, but the few hours I spent wearing this one, it felt and looked as consistent as my usual favorite pink lippies.

The packaging is understated but classy. I don’t like how large the surface area of the lipstick is as I tend to be messy at applying. (I usually go waaay outside my lips and then wipe it all off) But it doesn’t feel as drying as the Megalast but just as pigmented.

It takes a few layers, but even the first swipe was a darker, thicker black than the Blackheart lipstick.

9/10 (I don’t want to give it a solid 10 yet because it has yet to go through all the different tests- eating, drinking, a night at a party, etc…. but I expect great things from it based on my past positive Wet n Wild experiences.)

So my favorite eyeshadow OF ALL TIME….had an accident in my bag.

IMG_1663

Funny, of all the Covergirl, Ulta, and misc. eyeshadows I’ve ever owned, my favorite has still been this cute compact I bought at Beya (a very cheap and glittery jewelry store) for a buck. Idk the brand but they do bear the name “Starry u.s.a.”  It has nice shades of tan, brown, and a white that is nicely pigmented and longer lasting. Gosh.

IMG_1660

(Idk why they are all sideways) I went back to Beya today to see if I could get some more, since I had bought it maybe four years ago?? The two square ones to the right are my original eyeshadows and the two to the left are brand new. All cost one dollar each. The bottom left one is nice because is has a mirror on the back of the package, and that top row of colors is actually raised. (Two tiers haha it looks nice) The one above it has cutesy packaging, but I’m not loving how all four colors touch each other with no separation. I always manage to mix my colors even with plastic dividers….

IMG_1664

Above is a comparison between the off-white from a new package and my old, reliable white.

The two-tiered package has camel, two (almost the same) shades of blue, a purply-brown, one veryyy sparkly black, a light chocolate, a burnt sienna, and then a larger section of a creamy yellow. The four-color package has a dusty rose, off-white, deep purple, and black. All are shimmery.

I tried some of the off-white and it seems to have the same pigmente but sheer coverage of the old eyeshadow. I haven’t tried the rest but I have found that this brand does browns very well, but pinks tend to be too sheer. I don’t like their navy, so I doubt I’ll be using the blues or the blacks. All in all, I HIGHLY prefer these to Covergirl brand, which has continually dissapp

Hair growth progress- As of June 2015- I regularly trim my own bangs and they look amazing- choppy and short. The split ends have ruined lives and murdered small children. I haven't had a proper salon cut since July 2013. I might get a trim of 4ish inches by the end of the summer? I'm lazy.
