Today I will be reviewing these 6 black lipstick/lip products. These make up my entire black lippie collection thus far, ranging from my earliest Halloween costume makeup to cosplay to everyday lipstick.

I love a good black lip. It adds a pop of color when paired with light, pink eyeshadow or ties together a fiery red and black look. I wear it to school, on Halloween, to cons, to meetups. It’s pretty common for me these days. Unfortunately, as you know, finding a good lipstick with staying power and vibrancy is difficult.

To start out, let’s discuss the biggest no-no in black lipstick

Fantasy Makers (by Wet n Wild) Black

(Both shown above cost somewhere under $3)

This is what they sell at Publix and temporary Spirit Halloween stores for small children to smear on their faces. I bought this when I was ten. I wore it with my “Elphaba” costume and then later, in desperation, for Karkat.

At best, it was a fine grey along the bottom of my lips. It was never fully opaque and would rub off quickly, leaving a yucky line of black crud just outside my lip line. .5/10 do not buy

The other lipstick in the above picture was a random no-brand one I found on an end cap in Walgreens once but never again. It was slightly better but still sticky, ineffective, and not worth the money. 1/10

no name brand (ahahaha the horror)

I’m going to jump over to the Sally Girl Lip Color in Witchy Woman now.

This thing is TIIIINY. It was 84 cents at Sally’s Beauty Supply so I said “Why not?” It stinks though. It flat out refuses to go on my lips. It’s a pale grey, with almost more the consistency of a cheap chapstick lipbalm. It’s nourishing, I’ll give it that, but it certainly is not a true black lipstick. For under one dollar, however, it was worth a shot. 0/10

When it comes to black lipsticks, you don’t necessarily need to drop big bucks, but if one is so cheap it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t going to work. I’ve found more success in the $2-$6 range.

Next! (Hot Topic) Blackheart Poison Kiss lipstick

IMG_2124

When you think black, Hot Topic makes sense, right? So that’s where I tried next after Fantasy Makers wasn’t cutting it. This one is listed at $5 on their website.

I really wanted to like this one. The packaging was prettier than other lipsticks I owned. It seemed like a hit. At first, it applies relatively evenly but requires some serious coaxing to get it across my entire bottom lip. It looks fine for about 20 minutes before it fades and rubs off, leaving residue.

On its own, it’s several steps nicer that others, but still doesn’t have staying power. 5/10 (on its own)

However, it layers nicely with, say, black lipgloss! With a bit of gloss to cover the areas the lipstick just couldn’t cover, I was able to achieve a nice, shiny and long-lasting combination. 7/10 (combined with other products)

Now, luckily Rimmel came out with a Stay Glossy Lip Gloss in Black Diva

IMG_2123

I bought it at Walgreens for $5 (It seems that Target currently lists it for closer to $3. Many stores carry the Stay Glossy line but do not stock the black color. I find it interesting that they chose to include black, as it is an anomaly among the various pinks.)

On its own, the gloss is streaky and too wet to keep sticky. Application is messy and it does not coat the lip evenly. 4/10 (on its own)

But, of course, combined with a proper lipstick, it works pretty well. I rarely re-apply the black lipstick underneath and just refresh the look with more gloss. 7/10 (combined with other products)

wow

Finally, my new favorite

Wet n Wild Fergie lipstick in Pagan Angel

IMG_2126

I love these names. They bring out my almost-nonexistent babybat. I bought this one for under $4 at Walgreens. Now, for shades of pink and red I HIGHLY highly highly recommend the $1.99 Wet n Wild Megalast lipsticks. They are very drying but highly pigmented. The glossy shine wears off quickly but leaves a strong, matte color behind. They last a looong time but I need to hydrate a bunch in-between wears. I own several of them and use them every week just about.

So when I saw Wet n Wild had a new black lipstick, I was sold. (I see the hypocrisy here, as Fantasy Makers is by the same company, but there is a difference between the cheapo costume makeup and the proper lipstick lines meant for mainstream use)

The Fergie cosmetics are a little pricier than the basic lippies, but the quality continues to impress me. I’ll write more at length once I’ve used this one more, but the few hours I spent wearing this one, it felt and looked as consistent as my usual favorite pink lippies.

The packaging is understated but classy. I don’t like how large the surface area of the lipstick is as I tend to be messy at applying. (I usually go waaay outside my lips and then wipe it all off) But it doesn’t feel as drying as the Megalast but just as pigmented.

It takes a few layers, but even the first swipe was a darker, thicker black than the Blackheart lipstick.

9/10 (I don’t want to give it a solid 10 yet because it has yet to go through all the different tests- eating, drinking, a night at a party, etc…. but I expect great things from it based on my past positive Wet n Wild experiences.)

This is like half-review, half-rant, so bear with me. These are the items that help me achieve a positively glowing fake-fake-tan look for ganguro/manba purposes.

****Ben Nye Professional Crème Colors white clown lite compact: Super versatile and convenient. This is actually part of my homestuck cosplay supplies. I wear it as a base before my grey ben Nye layer. It is a cream/grease makeup and does get oily. I use it for reverse panda makeup, and it does have a bit of an issue around my eyelids. My creases get super oily and the white cream doesn’t stick well, so I frequently reapply. On my cheeks, however, it is effective. I also use it as lipstick, applying it with a small E.L.F. brush.

E.L.F. Contouring blush and bronzer: Slightly sparkly but not overwhelming, the bronzer side of the compact is the darker of my two favorite bronzers. I actually got this in last holiday’s gift bundle, but never used it until summertime. It stays mostly matte and lasts hours. For a powder, it isn’t too bad about rubbing off on everything I touch.

Wet N Wild Bronzzer: This thing is ANCIENT wow. I found it in my mom’s drawer, where it had to have been for at least six years, if not more. Whereas the E.L.F. bronzer looks brown in the pan, this one appears way more orange. I use this one over my foundation as the start of my orangeness, with the other bronzer to highlight (enhance? emphasize?) finer details. It’s pretty old and crumbly but I like the color. Rubs off like crazy, though.

Revlon Colorstay liquid foundation in 110 ivory: I’m actually going to buy new foundation soon. This is my old one that used to oxide on my skin and slowly turn orange throughout the day. I wear it with gyaru knowing that the oxidation will kick in when I need it and it makes a good base. This foundation lasts HOURSSSS like the claims are real. I’ve had it last mostly flawlessly for like 11 hours straight. Now, if only it came in a better color/formula for my oily skin…

(Sidenote~ Revlon Photoready concealer also turns red/orangey on my skin, so I sometimes use that to blend in around my jawline, but not always. With all the bronzer I use, it’s kind of unnecessary. Once again, a failed daily makeup product that I haven’t ditched yet.)

Ulta eyeshadows in seaside and cobalt: These two blue eyeshadows are sooo close in color, but cobalt has a slightly more teal than true blue feel to them. Seaside is perfect Vriska blue. I use them interchangeably. They look nice for the old-school blue eye look. They crease a bit but I think that’s more my skin type and eye shape. (My eye shape is complicated sometimes bc lack of good eyelid space)

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in 604 Milk:  I haven’t used this much yet. I have heard good reviews and it seems to be a go-to item for gyaru makeup. The thick tip and creamy texture seems good for highlighting the eyes and other smaller needs, but I doubt it’s ideal for huge eye circles like the Ben Nye is. I am interested to see how I can incorporate this pencil into my regular routine.

I’m not even gonna talk mascara because in my heart, there are only 3 mascaras for me (All Maybelline, of course….One by One, Falsies, and Great lash)

MISC. MUST-HAVES~~

E.L.F. Eyelid primer: I use this every time I wear eye makeup. Oh yes.

E.L.F. Waterproof Eyeliner Pen: It is not waterproof and actually dries up really quickly, but this was always my go-to marker for lining eyes. The tip is thin enough for precision but can split and fray really easily. Will definitely rebuy. It’s like 1 buck so when it wears out, no biggie to replace it. It’s worth the effort. Long lasting and a nice black color (until it dries out, then it’s a flimsy grey) NOTE: this is not that crappy one with the 3 part tip. That one reeks.

Rimmel London Soft Kohl kajal eye liner pencil: I have it in white and black. These babies got me through my early makeup years. I have since ditched them for better liners and eyeshadows, but I used to use the white ones for cosplay purposes and for the corners and waterline of my eyes. Too nostalgic to forget. Long lasting, easily glides on. They come in a lot of good colors. Rimmel is my favorite for normal pencils.

Various Claire’s cosmetics: I’m too cheap to throw anything away. I have a little tub of silver glitter from there. My fav eyelash curler is from there (I hate hate hate the E.L.F. ones). I have this super sheer and shimmery eyeshadow pencil that is good for drawing under-eye bags that are trendy right now.

Hair growth progress- As of June 2015- I regularly trim my own bangs and they look amazing- choppy and short. The split ends have ruined lives and murdered small children. I haven't had a proper salon cut since July 2013. I might get a trim of 4ish inches by the end of the summer? I'm lazy.
